My Place in Finland: Myths & Folklore

  • Cooperative 3E Opistokatu (Funkkis, old Opistotalo) Vaasa, Pohjanmaa, 65100 Finland (map)

There are several physical places, which have a story to tell.

Story places are natural objects such as rocks, cliffs, trees, wooded areas, water bodies or land, associated with traditional knowledge or folklore stories.

The story places can be used for traveling back in time, as well as for meeting the gnomes, leprechauns and other mythical creatures who lived in the forest according to Finnish mythology.

During this Story Place event, we’ll be discussing the Finnish folklore of different natural sites and reflect the meaning of these stories for navigating today’s society.

We’ll be using Riina Peltonen’s book: Witches, Skulls and Water Spirits – the Magical Travel Guide to Ostrobothnia to introduce different story places you may also visit on your own.

Riina’s book is published only in Finnish, hence this is a great opportunity to get to know some of the stories in English – which may also encourage you continue the journey later in Finnish.

The second part, My Place in Finland: Trip to Sommarö, will take place on the 14th of September as a full day guided expedition in Sommarösund, Södra Vallgrund, Raippaluoto.

Kindly note, that only people who have participated in this session, can register to trip to Sommarö.

My Place in Finland is a learning journey targeted at adult migrants who wish to understand the society and its people better. The two-part Story Place is one of the five places we are exploring during this journey.
