There are several physical places, which have a story to tell.
Story places are natural objects such as rocks, cliffs, trees, wooded areas, water bodies or land, associated with traditional knowledge or folklore stories.
During this Story Place trip, we’ll be discussing the Finnish folklore of different natural sites and reflect the meaning of these stories for navigating today’s society. Our expeditions takes us for a full-day trip to Sommarö, which is located in Södra Vallgrund on the island of Raippaluoto.
During the day we will focus on learning more about the Finnish animal myths as well as on sharing animal stories from diverse folklore, but will not forget the gnomes or other forest creatures either.
We’ll be also visiting different story places along the nature trails which leave from the old Sommarö Fortification Area.
Not to worry, we haven’t forgotten food! In the middle of the programme we’ll set a table to enjoy some snacks and stories together.
Practicalities:
• We’ll use the Sommarö Fort/Barracks as our base for the day. The building is equipped with kitchen and toilets, and in case of rain, we’ll have a roof on top of our heads.
• We’ll provide some tea, coffee & snacks, but you are welcomed to bring some dish of your liking to shared table.
• We’ll provide the return transport from Vaasa city center. We’ll meet at 12:00 in front of Funkkis (old Opistotalo) in Vaasa, and return to this same location at 17:00.
• Remember to dress according to weather, and be prepared for changes of weather during the day. It’s good to have shoes that fit walking on nature trails as well as lighter and warmer clothing along.
Participation fee:
All participants need to pay a 10 EUR reservation/participation fee prior the trip. The fee is per individual/family/couple. The fee is collected for covering the transport costs and venue rental. This is fee is NOT refundable in case you need to cancel your participation. We’ll send payment details to everyone after registration.
Kindly note, that only people who wish to participate this expedition need to also join the My Place in Finland: Folklore & Myths, organized 3/9/2024 at 17:30-19:00.
